Sulden’s own mountain
South Tyrol’s highest mountain rises right above Sulden. From your balcony at Hotel Cornelia you look out over the peaks around the Ortler and the Königsspitze.
King Ortler
The Ortler is 3,905 m high and the highest mountain in South Tyrol. It stands in the upper Vinschgau, within the Stelvio National Park, and is Sulden’s own mountain.
Its north face is the largest ice wall in the Eastern Alps. “King Ortler” was once the highest mountain of Austria-Hungary. Its name is said to have Celtic roots.
To the summit
Every route up the Ortler is a demanding high-alpine tour. The usual way is the normal route, which starts in Sulden or Trafoi.

The neighbours
Next to the Ortler stands the Königsspitze at 3,851 m. Together with the Zebru and other summits, 14 peaks over 3,000 m frame the Sulden valley.
In the First World War the front line between Italy and Austria-Hungary ran through here, from 1915 to 1917 in rock and ice: from the Stelvio Pass across the Ortler to the Adamello and the northern shore of Lake Garda.

From the hotel
