Discover

Right in the village

Two museumsin Sulden.

The first two destinations are in the heart of Sulden and within walking distance: the Messner Mountain Museum Ortles and the Ortler Region Museum.

  • Messner Mountain Museum OrtlesReinhold Messner’s museum lies underground and is dedicated to ice. It holds the world’s largest collection of pictures of the Ortler, ice tools from two centuries and shows the power of nature, such as avalanches.
  • Ortler Region MuseumIn Sulden’s primary school, owned by the Knoll family: the first ascent of the Ortler, pioneers, the First World War and minerals.

Stelvio National Park

Two centresfull of nature.

Sulden lies in the middle of the Stelvio National Park. Two national park centres nearby show what lives in the mountains and in the water.

  • naturatrafoiIn Trafoi, right on the Stelvio Pass road. The exhibition “Life on the Edge” tells of the habitat around the Ortler, its wildlife, plants and trails, alongside changing special exhibitions.
  • AquapradIn the centre of Prad am Stilfserjoch: life in water, with guided tours, excursions to the Prader Sand wetlands, preparation for the fishing licence exam and programmes for children and families.

Abbey and castles

Monks, knightsand Messner.

The Vinschgau is home to the highest Benedictine abbey in Europe and one of the mightiest castles in South Tyrol.

  • Marienberg AbbeyIn Burgeis, still home to Benedictine monks today. Inside lies a crypt of great artistic value, plus a museum about monastic life.
  • Churburg CastleHalf an hour from the hotel: one of the mightiest and best-preserved castles in South Tyrol. Its armoury, with more than 50 suits of armour, is famous.
  • Juval CastleNear Naturns, Reinhold Messner’s home since 1983. The castle offers an insight into his experiences in Tibet.

Towns and pass

Glurns, Meranoand 48 bends.

Glurns is one of the smallest towns in the Alps, and the spa town of Merano is an easy train ride away. On your way to Sulden you drive part of the legendary Stelvio Pass road.

  • GlurnsThe only town in the Vinschgau and one of the eight towns of South Tyrol. Its fully preserved walls divide it into an inner and an outer town.
  • MeranoAbout 1.5 hours from Spondinig on the Vinschgau railway. Stroll along the Passer promenade and the Tappeiner path, and shop under the arcades.
  • Stelvio Pass roadBuilt between 1820 and 1825, with 48 hairpin bends from Spondinig to the top of the pass. Part of it is also your road to Sulden.
